Stop Emulating other Brands!

Have you ever loved another brand’s aesthetic so much that you wanted to copy their look and feel for your own business?

I see this way too often with South African small business owners. Clients come to me asking to make their logo or visuals look exactly like Apple, Woolworths, Nike, or any number of massive global giants.

Don’t be a copycat!

While I completely understand the appeal (it feels like a clever, safe shortcut because those brands are already wildly successful), emulating them is actually a dangerous strategy for your business. Here are two massive reasons why copying kills your growth:

1. Misaligned Identity (The Trust Killer)

It tricks your buyers into thinking you are something you aren’t. Business owners often copy a look because they think it will make buyers trust them instantly in the same way they trust the big brand.

In reality, it does the exact opposite. It causes brand confusion. The moment a client realises your service or product doesn’t match that copied, corporate persona, there’s an immediate loss of trust.

2. Total Brand Invisibility (The Blending Problem)

It prevents you from standing out in your industry in an authentic way that connects with your ideal audience. If you look like another business, you are gonna blend into the background noise.

Many entrepreneurs don’t realise how vital brand differentiation is for survival. If you don’t stand out in your niche, you become a generic commodity, which hurts your visibility and drags down your sales.

Brand differentiation is about moving past the copycat phase and owning your own space.

Let’s talk about how to find your uniqueness.

5 Quick Exercises to Spark Your Brand Differentiation

Standing out from your competitors is about more than just picking a different colour palette. It’s about offering an intentional, unique perspective that nobody else can replicate, even if it’s just ONE single thing.

Because you are likely too close to your own daily operations to see what makes you special, here are five quick, practical exercises to help you unearth your unique differentiator:

1. The Anti-Competitor Audit

Look closely at your top three competitors. Write down what they all say, the colours they all use, and the promises they all make. Now, look at that list and ask yourself: “What is the exact opposite of this?”
For example: If everyone in your niche is corporate, clinical, and blue, that is your cue to be bold, human, and add a bright highlight colour.

2. The ‘Why You Actually Got Hired’ Interview

Ask your three favourite clients one simple question: “Why did you choose to work with me over someone else?”
The answer is seldom just “price” or “service.” It is usually your specific workflow, your attitude, your core values, or a unique problem you solved for them. That is your true differentiator.

3. Define the ‘Enemy’ of Your Business

What is a common industry frustration that you actively fight against? Are you fighting against rigid corporate jargon? Against agonisingly slow turnaround times? Against mass-produced, soul-less products? Polarising your small business against a common industry headache instantly differentiates you to frustrated buyers.

4. Write Your ‘Only’ Statement

Try to fill in the blanks:

Our business is the ONLY _________ that _________.

This forces you to drastically narrow your focus. If you can’t fill it in on a global scale, localize it!

For example: “The only functional graphic design studio in Durban that specializes in immersive small business branding.”

5. The Brand Personality Test

If your business were a celebrity, a car, a book, or a specific song, what would it be and why?

It sounds a bit silly, but it pulls you out of a boring business thought-rut and forces you to see the real human character and feeling behind your visual identity.

Don’t Let Your Insights Collect Dust: Action Them Now!

Once you’ve answered these questions and discovered what makes your business unique, don’t leave that useful info sitting in your notebook. Use it straight away to boost your visibility before you even touch your visual identity:

  • Update Your Social Media Bios: Revamp your profiles to include that one distinct thing that sets you apart. If you did my previous Unique Selling Point (USP) exercise, add this fresh insight right to it.
  • Rewrite Your Website Headline: Change your homepage header to state the primary reason clients hire you over your competition. Let visitors know why you are different within three seconds of landing.
  • Create a Core Content Piece: Write a blog article, record a Reel, or create a social post based on the ‘Enemy’ concept. Share a transparent story about an industry norm you refuse to participate in, and explain how you do things differently. Audiences crave authenticity; this will act as a magnet for dream clients while filtering out the bad fits.
