The Highs and Lows of My Infertility Book Cover Design

Sometimes I get challenging cover requests, The Highs and Lows of My Infertility Book Cover Design was one of those. To be honest, I struggled with the best way to implement an effective design for such a serious topic in a way that hadn’t been done before, and that would reflect the author’s message in a way that was a light-hearted take on a heavy topic.

Bianca connected with me during 2019 to design the cover for her book, The Highs and Lows of My Infertility. It’s a collection of blog posts about her trials and struggles on her IVF journey, to surrogacy. I had already worked with her the previous year on branding for an online business she had launched, which was what led to me working on this project too.

The Brief

In her brief, Bianca described what she wanted the cover to communicate “… the rollercoaster of trying to conceive. A mix of positivity and struggle. Excitement and crushing blows. But through it all keeping my eye on the prize and persevering, moving the mountain and making a way when there seemed to be no way. And eventually opening myself up to other possibilities of becoming a mom, ie. finally surrogacy. The feeling I would like to invoke is joining me on my journey – cry with me, be happy with me, cheer me on and celebrate at the end. Also for those in similar shoes to feel encouraged.”

Scope of work for this project was just the front cover design and a mockup that Bianca could use for promotions. No typesetting or book design was done.

This project was a while back so I don’t remember the details of my process for this, but I do remember having to sit down and think about it for longer than usual. I also read the entire book before getting onto concepts and sketches.

A Crazy Idea

Bianca wanted something different from all the other books available in this genre so I did take the time to do some research on covers of books that had already been published to see how we could get her cover to stand out, still appeal to her audience, and also embody her message visually.

I took a chance with a crazy idea I had of an anthropomorphic uterus on a rollercoaster, a literal interpretation of Bianca’s ‘rollercoaster’ ride of trying to conceive. I took myself online for a short refresher anatomy lesson to get the graphic details right and then sat down to draw the cover. I kept the colours anatomically appropriate but added in the blue to lift the design and align with the traditional ‘pink and blue’ gender reveal concept. Yellow was added as a highlight for the ‘ovaries’ and subtitle.

The illustration was vector drawn in Corel Draw, which is the platform I use for all my work. Because it was a custom design and not a stock graphic or AI image, it meant that Bianca has exclusive rights to use it without worrying that anyone else might have the same graphic on their cover.

To add to the quirky nature of the design, and manage the long title, I broke down the words into sections to form some hierarchy, and used individual letter blocks for ‘infertility’ to help it stand out and not blend into the design.

The final illustration has a hint of humour to it, which I wasn’t sure was completely appropriate, but Bianca loved it!
Incidentally, the cover won a Gold Star Award from The Book Designer in August 2019. LOL.

Author details

Today Bianca is the proud mum of twin boys. She has written a number of other Fertility books that can be accessed through her website (I didn’t design the covers for those), where you can also learn more about her journey and tips for IVF.

This particular book, The Highs and Lows of My Infertility’ is available for sale on Amazon, Goodreads, and also Audible.
