Display Banner for Maths Fundi

Penny O’Toole and Sally Goldman first reached out in 2019 to order a logo for their start-up company, Maths Fundi, specialising in maths study guides and workbooks for South African primary school teachers, students, and parents. This post focuses on the design process of the Display Banner for Maths Fundi.

Most of the work I’ve done for Penny and Sally involved book cover design, but they also needed a large standing pull-up banner to use at their workshop and events so buyers could find them easily and learn more about what they do while waiting to engage.

The branding for Maths Fundi is bright and bold, featuring blue, red, yellow, and green primary colours and a fun pattern built with mathematical symbols to connect with their primary learners. Their banner needed to reflect the same look and feel, and show their product and website and who they were catering for, but in a fun way without looking cluttered and overwhelming.

Most clients want to fit everything possible onto their banner, mistaking quantity for quality and functionality. Too much detail on a banner like this is not practical as the primary purpose of an event banner is to act as a marker that participants can see from a distance to find the company associated with the banner. Detailed information is better supplied via a pamphlet that can be taken away by participants.

Design Process

Before starting on the design, I made sure I understood exactly what Penny and Sally wanted included on the banner and the purpose of the design. First and foremost, it needed to be attractive enough to draw the right buyers to their educational stand. The content needed to be structured in such a way that it gave viewers the info they needed and made it easy for them to remember the company and what it was selling.

The banner was specifically for promoting the Maths Fundi Study Guides and the placement of each part of the design was carefully planned out by moi. The logo was placed right at the top of the banner so that was easy to spot from a distance and also included a clear placement of the company’s website so people could look them up on their phones if they were in a hurry to know more while waiting to speak to Penny or Sally.

Once a potential visitor had seen the banner and located the stand, they could see straight away that Maths Fundi was selling their maths study guides. Less important information like pictures of the study guides themselves and the ‘teacher, student, parent’ audience info was positioned lower down on the banner because the books were quite visible on the display table too so didn’t need to be the main focus of the banner.

The fun pattern at the bottom of the banner built from mathematical icons and symbols feature on their study guide covers, and was intentionally placed lower down on the banner, not only to add interest, but also because it’s at the height of a primary school child’s line of vision and intended to draw them in and engage their interest if they were accompanying a parent.

Images above and below show the 3 sections of the banner: top, centre, bottom, and also mockups of the banner in potential event situations.

The banner stands at 2m high by 850mm wide, standard pull up banner size. The process followed my usual method for functional design. The client asked about designing a banner. I sent over some questions to help me learn exactly what the banner needed to do and where it would be used. Using principles of neuromarketing and UX (user experience), I planned out the design, what would go where and why. I then compiled the design using elements that I had already created for past work (logo, book covers, patterns) and presented it to Penny and Sally for feedback. As far as I remember, no changes were needed and the banner was approved straight away. The print file was created and sent over to the ladies to send to their printing company.
