So, how do things work around here? Very simply, actually. Here’s what you can expect when you decide to hire me.
If you would like to meet with me to discuss your design or marketing needs, we can get together either at my studio, if you’re local, or via Skype if you aren’t. A consult is usually a 60 minute session (450 ZAR) where we talk about where you’re at and where you want to go in your business. We will also talk about your challenges and discuss solutions that you can either implement yourself, or with my help. Finally, I’ll address any questions you have before we wrap up, then follow up with an email summarising our session. Once you’ve booked your consult with me I’ll send you over an invoice for full payment upfront to secure your consult day and time. No-shows are non-refundable. Consults can be rescheduled if required, at no extra cost.
Once you’ve outlined where you want to start, and we’ve finalised costs for your project, I’ll personally send you a pro-forma invoice. You will be required to pay a 50% deposit to secure time in my schedule before we get stuck in. Once your deposit is received, you will be emailed a timeline breakdown for your work so you know when to expect proofs or feedback from me.
Some projects will require you to complete a questionnaire first, to gather additional relevant information on your business and requirements. This needs to be filled in timeously to ensure that your project rolls out according to schedule, especially if you have set deadlines. Once I’ve received your returned questionnaire, if I have more questions or need clarity on anything, I will email you requesting this information. Only once I have all the information I need for your project will I be able to get started.
Proofs and revisions
As soon as your first proofs are ready they will be emailed to you for checking. This can be anything from 3 to 10 working days of your deposit, depending on the extent of your project and my work queue. The sooner you send me back any changes, the sooner they can be implemented and a new revision supplied. All amounts quoted are inclusive of your first proof plus 2 basic revisions thereafter (i.e. minor changes, not complete reworks). Additional revisions are charged at my standard hourly rate and will be added to your final invoice.
When you’re happy with the final result, balance of payment will need to be settled before your design files can be released for use.
This option is to help you roll out your branding and marketing plan over 3, 6, 9 or 12 months, paying each month in advance for the duration of the project. When you order a design subscription, you will qualify for a 15% discount. Your work will also be on my priority schedule.
How the subscription works is by you deciding (with my help, if necessary) how you want to plan and roll out your design and marketing over a specified time period, and which of my products or services you will need to order throughout that period. We calculate the total, divide it by the number of months you’ve chosen, and that amount will be payable at the start of each month in order for your designated project items to be scheduled and completed during that month.
This option also works if you intend on ordering the same items every month (e.g. a newsletter, blog copy and social media graphics), for a specified number of months.
Note that this isn’t a retainer where you pay for x number of hours each month whether you use those hours or not. The benefit of a design subscription is that you have to actually plan the items you want to order in advance. This helps to keep you accountable for achieving your goals, but with me as your accountability buddy, helping you to reach those goals each month. Plus you get my 15% subscription discount.
Have your project featured
If your project complies to one of my portfolio categories (logo, brand, social, web, photo, or books), I will invite you to send me a review in order to feature on my website where I will share details on your project, background on your company, and links to your online places. I will also share your project and back links on my social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) and sometimes in my monthly emailer. This is a great way to get a bit of free exposure for your business, along with extra credibility.
By legal default, as the original designer, I retain the copyright to any design I generate for you. The payment you make to me is to cover the time taken to produce your work, and for generating the relevant files at the end of the project. Your payment does not entitle you to change those designs in any way (without my permission, such as with a Canva template), or to hand them over to another designer to change. As long as I hold the rights to your designs, I am permitted to display them publicly in my portfolio and as examples of my work. Should your business close and your designs no longer be in use, I am permitted to resell those designs or parts of those designs at my discretion. Should you wish to purchase the full rights to any original designs that I generate for you, please let me know so we can discuss a fair price. Standard going rate for full rights is usually about 10 x the original design cost, but it will qualify you to full ownership of your designs. Basically, you’ll be entitled to do whatever you like with them including reselling them, and they will no longer belong to me.
